What to check before buying
Buy in the right order. Almost every abandoned home gym was bought back to
front — machine first, bench never. The order that works is bodyweight, then a
bench, then adjustable dumbbells, then a rack and barbell if the space and the
habit both survive. A bench costs the least and unlocks the most, because it
converts equipment you may already own into a complete upper-body programme.
Measure movements per square metre. This is the only metric that matters in
a room you also live in. Adjustable dumbbells plus a bench cover perhaps
forty exercises across every major pattern. A dedicated leg machine covers one
and occupies more floor. Anything single-purpose has to justify itself against
that ratio.
Check the ceiling before the catalogue. Overhead pressing and pull-ups need
roughly 2.4 m of clearance, and racks are sold in short and tall versions for a
reason. Measure with a tape, standing where the rack would go, arms overhead.
Understand what “adjustable” costs you. Selectorised dumbbells trade
handling quality for space. Square profiles catch on ribs and forearms. Plastic
shells crack when dropped. None of this makes them a bad buy — it makes them a
compromise you should choose knowingly rather than discover in week three.
Weight-rating claims deserve scepticism, load ratings deserve respect. A
bench rated to 300 kg static is not the same as one rated for 300 kg dynamic
with a lifter moving on it. Look for a stated dynamic rating and a gap-free or
narrow-gap pad. A wobbling bench under a heavy press is the fastest way to stop
training.
Assume delivery is your problem. Racks, benches, and plates arrive heavy, in
awkward boxes, kerbside. Upstairs flats change the calculation entirely.
Budget the whole system. A rack is a frame. Without a barbell and plates it
does nothing, and those cost as much again. Price the working setup, not the
headline item.
Buy used wherever the item is steel. Benches, racks, plates, and barbells
are close to indestructible and the secondhand market is full of them, priced by
people who bought in the wrong order eighteen months ago. Anything with
bearings, electronics, or a subscription is a different matter. A rule that
serves well: if it would survive being left in a garden for a winter, buy it
used and save half.

What the evidence supports — and where it stops
Resistance training has been shown to preserve muscle mass, maintain bone
density, and improve functional capacity in adults over 40 — this is among the
better-supported interventions in the whole of health research, and the benefit
holds for people starting in their fifties and sixties. What the evidence does
not support is any particular piece of equipment. Research suggests that when
load, effort, and progression are matched, free weights, machines, and bands
produce broadly similar strength and hypertrophy outcomes. The barbell is not
magic; it is efficient at loading heavy, which is a logistical advantage, not a
physiological one.
Training at home may help adherence for people whose barrier is travel time or
self-consciousness, and research suggests home-based programmes can match
supervised ones when the programme itself is well designed. The consistent
finding across that literature is that supervision and structure predict results
better than setting does. Equipment has not been shown to improve adherence on
its own — the studies that find home training works are studies of people
following a plan, not people who bought a rack.
Progressive overload is the mechanism that matters, and it needs load you can

well to heavier loading, and that the common advice to stick with light weights
